Senior officials of the District Road Improvement Project (DRIP) have briefed the Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, on the progress and rollout of road infrastructure projects and the project’s growing contribution to youth employment across the country.
The engagement, which took place in Ho on December 15, was led by the Southern Zone Deputy National Coordinator of DRIP, Kwadzo Aboagye, and supported by the Volta Regional DRIP Coordinator, Mr. Elliot Wogbe. Discussions centred on the current state of DRIP implementation in the Volta Region and strategies to accelerate road construction and rehabilitation works.
Mr. Aboagye described DRIP as a flagship government intervention with dual benefits, stressing that beyond improving road infrastructure, the initiative is serving as a major employment avenue for young people. He disclosed that more than 30 youth have been engaged in each region nationwide under the programme, providing jobs while tackling poor road networks at the district level.
He further linked the DRIP initiative to the government’s broader vision of building a 24-hour economy, noting that reliable road networks are critical to sustaining round-the-clock economic activity. According to him, DRIP machinery has been deployed across regions and districts to support the construction of feeder and access roads that enhance trade, transportation and local economic growth.
The Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, welcomed the delegation and expressed satisfaction with the impact of the project so far. He commended the DRIP leadership for prioritising grassroots development and assured them of his full support to ensure the smooth implementation of the initiative in the region.
Mr. Elliot Wogbe, on his part, thanked the Regional Minister for the engagement and his commitment to the project. He noted that the DRIP team would continue to collaborate closely with the Volta Regional Coordinating Council to ensure the effective execution of government policies in line with the development agenda of the John Dramani Mahama-led administration.
As part of their oversight mandate, Hon. Aboagye and Mr. Wogbe are embarking on a five-day monitoring tour of all 18 districts in the Volta Region to inspect DRIP machinery and assess the progress of ongoing road works, as efforts intensify to improve infrastructure and stimulate local economies.
The DRIP initiative remains a key component of government’s strategy to enhance road infrastructure, create jobs and drive inclusive development nationwide.
