Policy Analyst Dr Steve Manteaw has raised concerns over President John Dramani Mahama’s recent appointments, warning that the President could lose the public support he currently enjoys if the trend continues.

Dr. Manteaw criticized the President for appointing individuals to roles they are not qualified for, describing the situation as a case of “square pegs in round holes.” He emphasized that the public may soon grow disillusioned if these questionable decisions persist.

He further stated that President Mahama needs to be cautious, as continued missteps in appointments could result in a loss of the goodwill the President has from the Ghanaian people.

Supporting Dr. Manteaw’s view, H. Kwasi Prempeh, Chairman of the Constitutional Amendment Committee, called for limits on the number of direct appointments a president can make. He argued that when too many appointments are at the discretion of the President, it undermines quality control, due diligence, and post-appointment oversight.

Prempeh suggested that establishing clear meritocratic criteria and qualifications for certain appointments would help ensure competent individuals fill key roles in government.

Both experts stress the need for reforms in the appointment system to protect public trust and improve governance in Ghana.
