Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has advised the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, to stay clear of political controversies and protect the independence of his office.

His comments came during a parliamentary session on March 5, where Dr. Asiama was addressing concerns regarding the cost of BoG’s new headquarters.

Afenyo-Markin questioned the selective scrutiny of the central bank, recalling former President John Dramani Mahama’s 2015 State of the Nation Address, where he raised concerns about poor banking sector supervision, with Dr. Asiama serving as deputy governor at the time.

Afenyo-Markin cautioned Dr. Asiama to avoid being used for political purposes, emphasizing that the central bank’s role is critical to Ghana’s economy. He also warned against politicizing the office, urging others to do the same.

Additionally, he called on the Majority in Parliament to handle economic matters with care, highlighting that their decisions could have far-reaching consequences for the nation’s financial stability.
