“Doctors who refuse postings will be relieved of payroll”- Health Minister

The Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, says the government has taken a firm decision to remove medical doctors who refuse postings to rural communities from the payroll.

According to the minister, it takes effect at the end of February 2026, a move that forms part of broader efforts by the sector to address the persistent shortage of health professionals in deprived areas.

He stressed that the government is keen on ensuring equitable access to healthcare across the country.

Speaking on TV3, the minister reiterated how some medical doctors have failed to compromise and report to their stations in poor areas despite numerous engagements and directives.

“It’s just not fair that you are being paid and you have refused to go to your postings. It will be strictly enforced, although with the help of some of the district directors and community leaders, some are resuming post. But there are others who have refused to, and so they will be taken off,” he stated.

He noted that such actions undermine national efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery, adding that authorities will intensify monitoring to ensure full adherence.
