Czech President, Health Minister commission Kpone Hospital

In a landmark development for Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure, the Government of Ghana, in partnership with the Czech Republic, has officially commissioned the Kpone Municipal Hospital in the Greater Accra Region.

The state-of-the-art medical facility represents a significant step toward enhancing equitable access to quality healthcare across the country.

The Kpone Municipal Hospital was constructed by Czech-based firm VAMED Health Projects CZ s.r.o., known for its track record in delivering world-class healthcare facilities.

The newly opened hospital is fitted with modern amenities, including an Outpatient Department, Surgical Suite, Delivery Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Laboratory, Pharmacy, and a 40-bed inpatient ward.

In addition, the facility features Services Block, staff offices, and accommodation for health workers. It comes with a one-year post-completion warranty and maintenance plan to ensure optimal performance and longevity of equipment and infrastructure.

The project was made possible through a significant financial package amounting to €71.5 million, secured from Erste Group Bank AG and Česká Spořitelna a.s. It also received an €8.6 million export credit guarantee from EGAP, the Export Guarantee and Insurance Corporation of the Czech Republic.

This financial arrangement reflects the depth of economic and diplomatic ties between Ghana and the Czech Republic, underscoring a shared commitment to sustainable development.

At the commissioning ceremony, Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, hailed the hospital as a critical component of the country’s broader healthcare expansion plan.

He noted that the facility is part of a larger multi-regional initiative that includes hospital developments in Eastern, Ashanti, and Ahafo Regions, benefiting communities such as Jumapo, Nkwatia, Suame, and Mim.

According to the Minister, the hospital will not only provide life-saving healthcare but also stimulate local employment and economic growth.

“This is more than just a hospital; it’s an investment in the people,” Akandoh remarked. “It’s about creating opportunities, reducing health disparities, and advancing our long-term vision of health-led development through initiatives like free primary healthcare.”

The Health Minister pointed to improvements in national health indicators—particularly the reduction in maternal and under-five mortality rates—as evidence of the impact of such initiatives.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing and operationalizing all ongoing hospital projects nationwide to ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of location, has access to comprehensive healthcare services.

Visiting President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel expressed his country’s pride in collaborating with Ghana on this transformative project.

In an address, he described the Kpone Municipal Hospital as both a symbol of technological advancement and a testament to the growing partnership between the two nations.

Historically, Ghana and the Czech Republic have maintained a steady diplomatic relationship, with cooperation in sectors such as energy, agriculture, and health.
