Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has expressed confidence in Ghana’s national team, commending the current coaching team for implementing a clear succession plan.

His remarks follow Ghana’s participation in the 2025 Unity Cup in London, where head coach Otto Addo gave several young players their senior team debuts.

Veterans like Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, and Inaki Williams were absent from the tournament, allowing new faces to take the spotlight. Five debutants, Joseph Tetteh Anang, Aaron Essel, Caleb Yirenkyi, Abdul Aziz Issah, and Mohammed Gaddafi Fuseini, featured prominently.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, Akonnor, who led the Black Stars from 2020 to 2021, praised the youth integration.

“Potentially, the young players have good talent,” he said. “Soon, this generation will fade, and these players will be ready to step in.”

Akonnor believes Ghana’s current strategy reflects a forward-thinking approach, ensuring the team remains competitive for years to come.

Ghana bounced back from an opening loss to Nigeria with a commanding 4-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, finishing third in the Unity Cup.

The Black Stars will return to action in September for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, facing Chad and Mali on Matchdays 7 and 8.
