Chief justice should honourably resign, not fuel drama – Prof Khalid advises

In a thought-provoking statement, Professor Mahmud Sharif Khalid, Economic Advisor to the Office of the Vice President, has posited that Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo should have relinquished her position amidst the swirling controversy surrounding her tenure.

This assertion comes on the heels of a recent poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, which revealed that a significant majority of Ghanaians are in favour of the Chief Justice’s removal.

During an appearance on Channel One TV’s esteemed program, “The Big Issue,” on Saturday, April 19, Professor Khalid unequivocally stated, “If I were her, based on the conventions and observations with what has been happening over the years, I would have honourably resigned and walked away. I wouldn’t even stay to ignite this drama.”

According to Professor Khalid, such an action would have been in line with established precedent, citing the removal of former Electoral Commissioner Charlotte Osei as a comparable example.

“The precedent was set a very long time ago, and I don’t understand why we are discussing it now,” Professor Khalid remarked, emphasizing that the situation is not without historical context.

“That has happened before. It is nothing new under the sun,” he added, underscoring the notion that the Chief Justice’s potential departure would not be without precedent.

Professor Khalid’s comments have reignited the debate surrounding the Chief Justice’s tenure, with many Ghanaians calling for her removal in light of the ongoing controversy.
