Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been hospitalised following his arrest and hours of interrogation by state security officers.
His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, also a former NPP Member of Parliament, confirmed that Wontumi fell ill during questioning and required immediate medical attention.
“My client has been taken to the hospital for medical treatment. We haven’t finished the interrogation, so we’ll continue when his condition improves,” Appiah-Kubi told reporters.
The NPP has described the arrest as an act of political intimidation. According to party officials, Wontumi had voluntarily appeared at the CID headquarters in Accra when heavily armed, masked officers suddenly took him into custody for further investigation.
Although the exact charges remain undisclosed, the police have reportedly raised certain allegations, which Wontumi has already addressed, according to his legal team. The interrogation was halted due to his health concerns.
In a related development, Wontumi also received a civil writ of summons from Exim Bank earlier in the day. His lawyer said they are reviewing the pleadings and plan to respond.
“This is a civil issue, and we will deal with it in court. It’s separate from the ongoing criminal investigation,” Appiah-Kubi clarified.
The incident has triggered widespread reactions within the NPP. Senior party figures, including National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, have condemned the arrest, calling it politically driven and reminiscent of “dark days” of oppression.
Despite the tension, the NPP says it remains committed to the legal process. “We are cooperating fully. We believe in the rule of law,” Appiah-Kubi stated.
The party is expected to issue further updates as Wontumi’s condition and the legal situation evolve.
