Central Region Tops Human Trafficking

The Central Regional Police Officer In-charge of Pubic Affairs Unit in Ghana Police Service, ASP Irene Oppong has bemoaned the high rate of human trafficking in the central region of Ghana.

According to ASP Oppong, 15 human trafficking cases have been recorded in the first quarter of this year 2017 in the region.

[ads1]Speaking to the media during a day workshop against human trafficking and child labor in Eliman in the Komenda Edina Ekuafo Abrem District, she said human trafficking is a problem in both developing and industrialized countries and therefore seriousness must be attached in dealing with it.

She added that not only children but adult from the coastal fishing communities are relatively better swimmers compared to children from the hinterland and the savanna areas of the country and are therefore more targeted for human trafficking and child labour especially in the fishing communities.

She stressed that some people also take the children from poor homes where the family are not able to take care of the children.

According to the ASP, it is about time the authorities in the region together with the police to demonstrate adequate commitment in combating human trafficking and child labour, the region stands to lose millions of children especially in the coastal areas.

Some participants who attended the program, also called on parents who involved themselves in human trafficking and child labor to put a stop to it , it against the laws of this country but the health and future of the children as a whole.
