The Minority in Parliament has taken a swipe at the government over the persistent depreciation of the Ghana cedi, accusing it of lacking a credible strategy to stabilize the currency.

At a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, responded to comments made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review.

The Minister had admitted that the “cedi no apicki”,  a local expression for the cedi’s good performance.

Dr. Amin Adam fired back, saying, “Cedi no apicki, but Abochi get the dollar,” referencing remarks by MP Isaac Adongo to highlight the currency’s weakness and the growing gap between interbank and forex bureau rates.

He revealed that importers are struggling to access dollars from commercial banks, worsening the business climate.

He also accused the Bank of Ghana of injecting over US$1.4 billion into the forex market in Q1 2025, citing IMF disclosures, while publicly denying such interventions.

“These interventions are ad hoc, opaque, and lack any transparent, rule-based framework,” he stated.

The Minority blames the situation on what it calls gross economic mismanagement by the John Mahama administration.
