Cedi depreciation forced Akufo-Addo to the IMF – Omari Wadie

Former National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Michael Omari Wadie, has pointed to the significant depreciation of the cedi in 2021 and 2022 as a key factor that led President Nana Akufo-Addo to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Speaking during an interview on GHOne TV, Omari Wadie explained that the sharp decline of the cedi, which saw the dollar rise from 6 to 12 cedis within just three months, severely impacted businesses and livelihoods, forcing the government to turn to the IMF for financial support.

In addition to the economic crisis, Omari Wadie also discussed voter apathy as a critical issue in the last election.

He revealed that many NPP supporters, while not supporting John Mahama, chose not to vote due to dissatisfaction with the situation, particularly following the economic difficulties of 2021.

The combination of economic struggles and political disengagement contributed to a challenging political environment for the NPP.
