Blackstar Experience set to spotlight Ghana on global stage

In a bold move to rebrand Ghana as Africa’s cultural capital, the government has launched the Blackstar Experience, a multifaceted initiative designed to attract global attention through the country’s rich heritage, arts, and sports.

At the official unveiling on May 1, 2025, the Coordinator of the initiative, veteran musician Rex Owusu Marfo, popularly known as Rex Omar, described the Blackstar Experience as more than a tourism campaign. “It’s a movement,” he declared, “a reawakening of national pride and an invitation to the world to experience the soul of Ghana.”

A Unique Football Showcase

Among the key highlights of the initiative is an exhibition football match featuring legendary players from international football clubs and Ghana’s own national icons. These high-profile games will take place in Accra and Kumasi, backed by the private sector, with two grand launches planned, first in Europe, then in Ghana.

Seven Cultural Pillars

The Blackstar Experience is anchored on seven key pillars: cinema, audio, cuisine, aesthetics, style, literature, and heritage. These elements reflect Ghana’s diverse cultural identity, from its rhythmic music and ancestral storytelling to vibrant markets and scenic landscapes.

“Our goal,” Rex noted, “is to elevate Ghana’s image to match the world’s top 20 tourism destinations.”

A Cultural Renaissance

The programme will blend both new and existing events, aligning them with the Experience’s core mission. Collaborations with international organisations, including Atlanta’s annual Blackstar Week, are expected to further amplify Ghana’s creative exports and investment potential.

Planned projects include:

Ananse Studio – a state-of-the-art film production facility

Ghana Music Week – celebrating the nation’s music heritage

Creative Connect – an annual stakeholder summit

Detty December – a festive tourism magnet

With these initiatives, Ghana aims to solidify its place as a must-visit destination for culture, creativity, and unforgettable experiences.
