Binduri: Gov’t imposes curfew, bans weapons to curb tensions

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has announced a revised curfew for Binduri township and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region, which will now be enforced from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.

This new measure, effective immediately, aims to address escalating tensions and maintain peace and security in the region.

The decision to impose the curfew comes after consultations with the Upper East Regional Security Council, which advised the government to take necessary steps to restore calm in the area.

The government is particularly concerned with preventing further unrest and ensuring the safety of residents.

In a public statement issued on Sunday, April 13, 2025, the Interior Minister urged the people of Binduri to remain peaceful and use constructive means to resolve their differences.

The government also called on traditional leaders, including chiefs, elders, and youth, to play an active role in promoting peace within the community.

As part of the heightened security measures, the government has enacted a strict ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and any offensive weapons.

It has also warned that anyone found in possession of such items will face immediate arrest and prosecution.

In addition to the weapon ban, the government has placed restrictions on the movement of motorbikes, tricycles, and aboboyaa within the affected areas.

The decision to restrict these vehicles is due to their association with previous incidents of violence in the region.

The government has stated that any individual caught violating these restrictions will also face legal consequences.

Notably, there is a special focus on men wearing smocks, a garment that has been linked to acts of violence in the past.

The government has directed that the wearing of smocks in the area be strictly controlled.

Authorities are urging the citizens of Binduri to cooperate fully with the measures in place and to work towards a peaceful resolution of the current challenges.
