A Communications Team Member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abdulai Sakra Alhassan, has described former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as a “mismatch” for the NDC ahead of the 2028 general elections, insisting that his ruling party remains confident of maintaining its political dominance regardless of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) choice of flagbearer.

According to Abdulai Sakra Alhassan, Dr. Bawumia’s record in government does not position him as a formidable contender capable of challenging the NDC’s political message or governance credentials in the next election cycle.

Speaking during a media engagement, he argued that the former Vice President’s long tenure at the heart of economic decision-making has exposed what he described as weaknesses in policy execution and outcomes, particularly in relation to the economy.

He noted that persistent economic challenges experienced under the NPP administration, including rising public debt, inflationary pressures, and the high cost of living, would continue to influence voter judgment against Dr. Bawumia.

“Ghanaians have assessed Dr. Bawumia beyond political rhetoric. He has been central to economic management, and the realities on the ground do not support the image he seeks to project,” Abdulai Sakra Alhassan stated.

He further dismissed claims that the former Vice President’s communication skills or digitalisation initiatives would be sufficient to win public confidence, stressing that voters are more interested in concrete improvements in livelihoods and economic stability.

“If someone who secured 61 per cent in his party’s internal elections in 2023 went on to obtain just 38 per cent in the general elections, and now returns to secure 56 per cent again in internal elections in 2026, you can clearly imagine his standing even within his own party before he faces the broader Ghanaian electorate.”

The NDC communicator reaffirmed his party’s preparedness for the 2028 elections, stating that it would campaign on its governance record and policy alternatives aimed at economic recovery, job creation, and social protection.

“The NDC is focused on substance, not personalities. Based on performance and the expectations of Ghanaians, Dr. Bawumia does not represent a serious electoral challenge to us in 2028,” he added.

His comments come at a time when discussions are gradually emerging within the NPP regarding leadership and succession as the country looks ahead to the next general elections following the flagbearer election.
