Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued a heartfelt apology to party members for the party’s poor showing in the last general elections.

Speaking in London, Dr. Bawumia admitted that the party made several miscalculations that contributed to their loss in both the presidential and parliamentary contests.

“The NPP worked hard, no doubt about that, but we didn’t get everything right. We made some mistakes. On my behalf and that of the party, I sincerely apologize for our failure to deliver the expected results,” he said.

Despite the defeat, Dr. Bawumia struck a hopeful tone, expressing confidence in the party’s future. “By the grace of God, if given another opportunity, we will correct our mistakes. We have learned valuable lessons that will guide us going forward,” he assured supporters.

Following the crushing loss, a 12-member committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, conducted a thorough review and submitted its findings to the party’s leadership. However, the report has not been made public, as party officials maintain it is for internal use only.

In the 2024 presidential election, John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won with 6,328,397 votes (56.55%), while Dr. Bawumia polled 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

The parliamentary results were equally devastating for the NPP. The NDC now holds 183 seats in Parliament, while the NPP trails with just 88, marking a dramatic shift in Ghana’s political landscape.
