Bawku crisis: Soldiers on peace mission accused of theft during operation

Members of the Ghana Armed Forces who are on a peace mission in Bawku, have been accused of carting away a whooping GHS50,000 during an operation in the municipality.

The allegation was levelled against soldiers who took part in the operation, by a woman, Sawratu Dauda, whose room was searched.

According to Sawratu, the leadership of the military was able to refund her only a little over GHS28,000 after she confronted them. She added that the military said nothing about the remainder of the ‘stolen’ money.

The military operation, which took place on Sunday, April 14, was a proactive approach to ensure the return of peace in Bawku and its environs. It involved “cordon and search” activities.

In areas like South Natinga, Sabon Zongo and Kpalore, the operation reportedly turned chaotic.  Soldiers allegedly broke down home doors and chased down panicked and fleeing landlords and other breadwinners. Several people, mostly men, reported sustaining varied degr injuries while others accused some of the operational men of theft.
