Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has rebuked Effiduase-Asokore MP, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, following a heated confrontation over the ongoing nurses’ strike. However, the Speaker stopped short of referring him to the Privileges Committee for disciplinary action.

The incident occurred after Dr. Afriyie attempted to make an urgent statement regarding the nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), which has severely disrupted healthcare services since June 4.

Tensions flared in Parliament on June 10 when First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor blocked the request, citing procedural rules. Dr. Afriyie’s insistence on proceeding led to a dramatic ejection order and protests from Minority MPs.

In his address to the House, Bagbin emphasized the importance of parliamentary procedure and respect for leadership. While acknowledging the seriousness of the nurses’ strike, he criticized Dr. Afriyie for bypassing proper channels.

“The title ‘Honourable’ is not just for show; it reflects a duty to uphold the rules and respect this House,” Bagbin said.

Despite calls for sanctions, the Speaker chose not to escalate the matter further, appealing instead to MPs to maintain order and decorum.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has since pledged the cooperation of his side to ensure smooth parliamentary proceedings.
