Parliament has unveiled a major initiative aimed at boosting its legislative effectiveness.
Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin officially launched a $1.6 million capacity-building project in collaboration with the World Bank and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
The project, titled “Building the Capacity of Parliamentarians for Economic and Financial Governance,” focuses on equipping MPs and parliamentary staff with the tools and expertise needed for robust economic oversight and improved legislative functions.
At the launch, Speaker Bagbin expressed deep appreciation to the two international partners. He noted that the initiative would reinforce Ghana’s democracy by enabling Parliament to better fulfill its constitutional mandate.
“A retooled Parliament means greater efficiency, stronger economic governance, and restored public trust in our democratic institutions,” Bagbin stated.
Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, also welcomed the initiative. He emphasized its potential to strengthen Parliament’s engagement with development partners and improve its ability to execute oversight duties.
From the international side, H.E. Keith McMahon (UK FCDO) and Ms. Michelle Keane (World Bank) underscored the value of continuous development for lawmakers. They highlighted how the project aligns with Ghana’s Sustainable Development Goals by promoting transparency, combating corruption, and ensuring prudent public finance management.
Bipartisan support was evident. Leaders from both sides of Parliament, Hon. Mahama Ayariga (Minority) and Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin (Majority), praised the project as timely and vital. They urged committee chairs to take full ownership and ensure its successful rollout.
The new program is expected to modernize Ghana’s legislative processes, deepen partnerships with global institutions, and contribute significantly to national development.
