Lawyer Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed has been confirmed as the newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso East Constituency under the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The former High Commissioner to Nigeria beat off competition from NPP’s Baba Ali Yussif, Liberal People’s Party (LPP) Ibrahim Iddrisu, and two other independent candidates, Mohammed Umar Sanda and David Kanor, respectively, to resume his new role.

Baba Jamal pulled 10,884 votes, while Ibrahim Iddrisu gathered 43; Baba Ali Yussif of the NPP scored 4,009 votes; and Mohammed Umar Sanda gained 1,885 votes with David Kanor securing 104 votes.

The total number of valid votes from the 118 polling stations was 16,928, while 120 were confirmed as rejected ballots by the electoral officer.

The by-election attracted significant political interest after Baba Jamal stepped down from his post as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria to contest for the NDC’s primary, where he won massively against Hajia Amina Adams, wife of the late MP for Ayawaso East, Nasser Toure.

Baba Jamal expressed his profound gratitude to the party and assured constituents of resetting the Ayawaso East Constituency.

He is expected to be sworn into office in the coming days to formally replace the late Nasser Toure who passed on in early January.
