The Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Abdulai Ayariga, says the government has pledged to fully complete the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex by the end of 2026.
The complex, which began renovation in 2018, was stalled due to severe financial constraints and contractor abandonment, leaving the project in a state of disrepair since roughly 2020.

Although meant to be a 5,000-capacity youth center, the site has deteriorated into a “forest” and a security risk, with calls for it to be rehabilitated into a boxing hub.
Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Ayariga indicated the Ministry of Finance has released funds, and the contractor is expected to resume work soon.
According to him, the completion of some key departments is expected soon.
“Hopefully, we are looking at the contractor resuming work as soon as possible, even before the end of this month. We hope to complete the entire sports complex before the end of the year, thanks to the capital injection by the Ministry of Finance and His Excellency John Mahama.”
“He is very passionate about completing the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, and not only that but also the Youth Resource Centers across the country. Currently we have eight, which are at various stages of completion. The promise was to complete at least two this year. We are looking at completing the Azuma Nelson Complex and any other center, minimum,” he added.
Facilities including a swimming pool, a standard football pitch, a basketball court, running tracks, and a tennis court, as well as an ICT center, a counseling center, and an entrepreneurship center, are all expected to be added to when the complex is fully completed.
Mr. Ayariga further noted that the total cost of construction at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex will be disclosed after the project is fully completed.
