Avedzi demands punishment not just refunds for corrupt officials

James Klutse Avedzi, the former Chairman of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), has criticized the current practice of simply allowing corrupt officials to repay stolen public funds without facing any legal repercussions.

In a recent interview on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition, Avedzi acknowledged that recovering misappropriated funds is a positive step, but he stressed that it should not be the end of the process. He argued that punishing the wrongdoers is just as important to curb corruption.

Avedzi pointed out that while recovering the stolen money is important, the absence of consequences for corrupt actions encourages further wrongdoing.

He questioned the fairness of a system where individuals can return the stolen funds but keep any profits made from them, stressing that it fuels a culture of impunity.

His comments align with growing concerns over how the public sector handles corruption and add to calls for more stringent legal actions against those misusing state resources
