Ewurabena Aubynn has officially been sworn in as the new Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North following her victory in the July 11 rerun election.
The brief swearing-in ceremony, held on Tuesday, July 22, was marred by controversy after the Minority Caucus staged a walkout.
Their protest was triggered when Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, denied their request to comment before the swearing-in.
Citing parliamentary procedure, the Speaker said remarks could only be made after the oath was administered, a position the Minority rejected.
Unfazed by the walkout, the Speaker proceeded with the ceremony, administering the oath to Ms. Aubynn and offering counsel to Ghana’s youngest MP. He urged her to uphold discipline, humility, and commitment to her constituents.
“Four years is just a day. You’ll return to your people, and they’ll judge you based on your performance,” Speaker Bagbin said.
He also warned against yielding to undue political influence, reminding her that the trust of her constituents must be her primary compass.
Aubynn’s victory followed the annulment of results in 19 polling stations during the 2024 general elections due to procedural breaches and violence.
The rerun has since been challenged by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), who continue to dispute its fairness.
Her swearing-in strengthens the ruling National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) majority in Parliament, increasing its seat count to 184.
