The John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage has announced a series of events to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the death of former President Professor John Evans Atta Mills, who served as Ghana’s third President of the Fourth Republic.

During a press conference at the International Press Centre in Accra, the Heritage outlined the planned activities to honor the legacy of the late leader, whose life and work continue to inspire many Ghanaians.
This year’s theme is “Atta Mills: A Case Study for the Fourth Republic,” and the events will reflect the core values of humility, discipline, integrity, excellence, and compassion that characterized Professor Mills’ life and leadership.
Key activities include:
Commemorative Lecture: Set for July 22 at 2:00 PM at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), this lecture will feature Charlotte Osei, former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, as the keynote speaker, with Hon. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff, serving as chair.
Wreath-Laying and Memorial Service: A solemn ceremony will be held on July 24, 2025, at 9:00 AM at Asomdwee Park, the final resting place of the late president, allowing citizens, family, and dignitaries to pay their respects.
Hockey Tournament: The celebrations will wrap up with the Atta Mills Memorial Hockey Tournament on July 26, 2025, at 7:30 AM at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium, honoring President Mills’ passion for hockey and his dedication to youth development.
The Memorial Heritage also shared achievements from the past year, including the publication “Atta Mills Around the Regions,” which documents regional commemorative lectures and the president’s life story, as well as an upcoming documentary on his legacy. Additionally, the Heritage continues to sponsor academic awards at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and promote civic values and good governance through public engagement.
“Our mission is to preserve, promote, and project the legacy of Professor Mills. His legacy is not just a memory; it serves as a blueprint for the future,” stated a spokesperson for the Memorial Heritage.
Ghanaians are encouraged to engage in these activities, with a call for support from civic organizations, the media, and individuals nationwide.
As the country reflects on the thirteen years since President Atta Mills’ passing, the Heritage emphasized that this commemoration is not merely ceremonial but a chance to revive values-based leadership and national unity.
