Ato Forson
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minority Leader in Parliament, has raised concerns about the integrity of Ghana’s voter register, citing irregularities that could compromise the credibility of the 2024 general elections.
He urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to thoroughly audit the voter register to address these issues and ensure a free, fair, and transparent process. The Minority Leader also threatened to recall Parliament to compel the EC to conduct the audit if necessary.
“We believe that the voter’s register must be audited. The level of tampering we’ve observed so far makes it impossible to proceed without a proper review. This audit will help us understand the extent of the issue and fix the system,” Dr. Forson stated when he joined protesters in Accra during the “Enough is Enough” demonstration which was organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Referring to his constituency, Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam, Dr. Forson revealed alarming discrepancies, including the addition of approximately 3,000 names to the transfer register and multiple registrations, inflating the voter roll by about 5,000 names.
“This raises serious concerns, and we need Parliament to intervene,” Dr. Forson emphasized.
The NDC leadership is determined to push for reforms within the Electoral Commission (EC) to address these discrepancies before the elections.
Dr. Forson cautioned that failure to audit the voter register would cast significant doubt on the legitimacy of the upcoming elections, potentially eroding public trust in the EC’s ability to oversee a transparent electoral process.
The NDC further warned that if these issues are not resolved, the credibility of the 2024 elections could be in jeopardy.
