Asiedu Nketia calls for Jean Mensa’s removal over electoral failures

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, demands the immediate dismissal of Jean Mensa and her team at the Electoral Commission (EC), citing persistent electoral misconduct and constitutional breaches.

In an interview on Maakye on Onua TV on Wednesday, June 11, Asiedu Nketia declared the EC under Jean Mensa as “unfit for purpose,” insisting that their continued stay undermines Ghana’s democratic processes.

“The Commission, in its current state, cannot deliver credible elections. Everyone knows this,” he said firmly, adding that the NDC will push for a formal petition to trigger constitutional procedures for her removal.

He referenced the EC’s failure to conduct elections in the Guan Constituency in 2020, which left residents of Santrofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) without parliamentary representation for four years, a situation only resolved with Fred Agbenyo’s election in 2024.

Nketia also slammed the EC’s handling of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election, describing it as fraught with procedural lapses. He further accused the Commission of showing similar irregularities in the Volta and Greater Accra Regions. “You can’t even declare results. That’s how broken the system is,” he said.

He stressed that electoral stalemates are not due to technical failures but deliberate rule violations. “No result should end in a stalemate unless someone is abusing their power or disregarding the law,” he stated.

According to Nketia, Ghana’s democracy can only thrive if the EC is led by professionals who are impartial and uphold the law.
