National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia is calling for removing Ghana’s top Electoral Commission (EC) officials immediately, claiming they’ve failed in their duties.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, June 25, Asiedu Nketia described the current Commission as “not fit for purpose.” He cited unresolved electoral disputes and poor leadership as reasons for his demand. “We are dealing with the wrong election management body. It needs a full reset,” he said.
When asked to explain, he clarified: “We must rebuild the EC into an institution that works. The way it operates now, it’s not effective.”
Negligence in Election Outcomes
Asiedu Nketia pointed to the Ablekuma North seat, where no MP has been sworn in six months after the election. He called the situation a sign of serious electoral mismanagement.
He also highlighted the SALL constituency issue, where voters went unrepresented for four years. “This EC failed in its first election and has now repeated the same blunders,” he said.
Direct Criticism of Jean Mensa
Asked if Jean Mensa should be removed, the NDC Chairman didn’t hesitate. “Yes. I believe the three top officials at the EC must all go. Their management has been terrible.”
He also cited problems with the Ayawaso West by-election, suggesting it further proves the Commission’s inability to manage credible elections. “If we continue with this EC leadership, we can’t expect electoral credibility. It’s time for a serious change,” he warned.
