Political Scientist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, believes Ghana is on a solid path to development, if the NDC government maintains its current course.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, he commended the administration’s early performance and urged sustained focus. “I am hopeful, and I have no doubt in my mind that this government has started well,” he said. “If they stay on course, we will reach our destination.”
Dr Asah-Asante urged President John Mahama to anchor his Reset Agenda on economic restructuring and industrialization, highlighting that these are essential for job creation and lasting prosperity.
“Economists and financial experts have stressed the need to restructure the economy to create decent jobs. I fully support that. This should be central to your Reset Agenda,” he said.
He called on the president to establish a legacy of sustainable industrial development, not short-term ventures.
“You must not leave office without building a strong, enduring industry. Industrialization must be your legacy,” he added.
Focus on Agriculture and Value Addition
Citing Ghana’s agricultural potential, Dr Asah-Asante noted the opportunity for value addition and agro-processing. “Look at the crops and fruits we grow. Can’t we process them and create jobs? Former President Kufuor once saw 14 different cocoa products. Let’s reignite such initiatives.”
He closed with a direct message to the president:
“Mr President, this must form part of your legacy. That is my message to you.”
