Arne Slot questions offside rule as Liverpool edge Everton in derby win

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has voiced his frustration over the interpretation of the offside rule, despite it favoring his side in their 1-0 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Diogo Jota’s 57th-minute goal was allowed to stand after Luis Diaz, initially in an offside position, was ruled not to have interfered with play before the ball reached Everton defender James Tarkowski. Slot admitted he disliked the rule, stating, “It’s not helping attacking teams… I hate that rule.”

Everton boss David Moyes was also unhappy, insisting Jota’s goal should have been ruled offside. However, he conceded, “Liverpool were the better team, no complaints with that.”

The match also saw controversy over Tarkowski’s challenge on Alexis Mac Allister, which was deemed reckless but not dangerous enough for a red card after a VAR review.

While Moyes acknowledged his side was fortunate, Slot refused to be drawn into the debate, saying the decision was “obvious” and needed no further comment.
