The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) starts a major decongestion exercise in Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025. The operation, carried out with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, aims to restore order and improve city sanitation.

The first phase targets busy areas such as Kinbu Road, ECG Junction, Opera Square, and the Railways stretch. These zones, near the AMA Head Office, have seen increasing congestion and poor sanitation in recent months.

AMA Public Relations Officer Gilbert Ankrah explained that teams will also move through Wato Junction, King Tackie Tawiah School, and Cow Lane. Additionally, nearby areas like Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick will be included.

“Our focus is clear,” Ankrah stated. “We’re addressing every zone around our head office to bring back order.”

Ahead of the cleanup, AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey met with street hawkers in the CBD. He urged them to cooperate and clear the pavements.

“I ask all traders to support this effort,” Allotey said. “We all want a cleaner, better-organized city. Let’s make it happen together.”

Furthermore, he hinted at future opportunities for vendors under the government’s upcoming 24-hour economy policy. This could allow traders to sell overnight, offering new options while maintaining order during the day.

With this initiative, the AMA takes a firm step toward reclaiming public space and improving daily life in Accra.
