Albert Kwabena Dwumfour has been re-elected President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), winning a clear majority in the national polls held on Monday, June 30.
Dwumfour, who first took office in 2022, secured 445 votes, representing 64.49% of total valid ballots. He defeated challenger Charles Yao Mawusi, who earned 245 votes (35.51%).
More than 800 accredited GJA members voted nationwide to fill six national executive positions and several regional roles. The high turnout reflected keen interest in the future of the association.
Though Mawusi joined the race late, his campaign unexpectedly gained momentum. His challenge forced the incumbent to adjust his strategy and secure fresh endorsements.
In other results, Rebecca Ekpe of GBC was elected Vice President, defeating Mary Mensah of the Graphic Communications Group. Ekpe replaces Linda Asante.
Suleiman Mustapha of Graphic Communications was elected Organising Secretary, while Zadok Kwame Gyesi took the role of Public Affairs Officer.
Overall, 12 candidates contested six national positions, while 49 others competed for regional posts, making it one of the most competitive GJA elections in recent years.
The new leadership team will serve a three-year term. Members expect them to lead reforms and advocate for press freedom in Ghana’s evolving media space.
