The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, RT Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, has reiterated his commitment to eliminating all schools under trees in the constituency through accelerated classroom infrastructure development.
He gave the assurance at Wodome during a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a three-unit classroom block with an office and store, as part of a constituency-wide package of education and health projects being rolled out.
According to him, providing safe and conducive learning environments for schoolchildren remains a top priority, and ongoing projects are deliberately targeted at replacing makeshift structures with permanent facilities. He stressed that children in Akatsi South deserve decent classrooms that support effective teaching and learning.
The First Deputy Speaker explained that the classroom project at Wodome forms part of a broader development programme covering multiple communities. He noted that several other projects were also captured under the current sod-cutting exercise and are scheduled across two days.
He recounted a number of initiatives undertaken in partnership with the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly, led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Daniel Dagba. These include the construction of classroom blocks, CHPS compounds with nurses’ accommodation, health facility upgrades, and water projects in 20 selected communities.
Projects captured under the sod-cutting programme include CHPS compounds with nurses’ quarters at Ahlepedo and Zuta; a three-unit classroom block at Wodome; six-unit classroom blocks with offices, staff common rooms and libraries at Zuta and Duowodome; a two-unit classroom block at Dzuepe; renovation works at the Wute Health Centre; and the drilling and mechanization of 20 boreholes across beneficiary communities.
The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, together with municipal officials and assembly members, joined parts of the exercise, highlighting intergovernmental collaboration in delivering basic infrastructure.
Residents who attended the ceremony welcomed the projects and commended the MP and the Municipal Chief Executive for what they described as practical steps toward improving education and healthcare delivery in the constituency.
