The Electoral Commission (EC) says the collation of results for the Ablekuma North parliamentary election remains stalled due to the Ghana Police Service awaiting legal advice from the Attorney General’s Department.
Police Delay Over Security Clearance
Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chair of the EC, disclosed this during a June 19 parliamentary briefing. He explained that although the Commission has made several attempts to resume collation, the absence of police support has brought the process to a standstill.
“On March 28, we wrote to the Police requesting security for the collation of three outstanding polling stations. We also proposed a meeting to set a date,” Dr. Asare stated.
A planned meeting on April 10 was affected by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) traveling to Bawku due to conflict. The EC followed up with a letter on May 2, suggesting May 8 for a new meeting. That meeting led to May 15 being proposed for the collation.
However, just two days before, on May 13, the Police informed the EC that a Supreme Court case was pending on the issue. They warned that completing the collation might be seen as contempt of court.
EC Maintains Legal Grounds Are Clear
The EC responded on May 15, clarifying that no injunction was in place and again requested security support, proposing another meeting on May 16. The Police replied that they had referred the matter to the Attorney General and would act only after receiving legal guidance.
“Since then, we’ve continued to follow up, but the Police maintain that they are still awaiting advice from the AG,” Dr. Asare added.
The EC has reiterated that a re-run is not yet necessary. It believes the collation can proceed once legal and security issues are resolved.
