AG dismisses CJ Torkonoo’s objections in impeachment probe

The Attorney General has rejected objections raised by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo in the ongoing impeachment proceedings. The AG insists there’s no bias, procedural irregularity, or constitutional breach.

In a formal response, the AG defended the use of in-camera hearings, calling it a “constitutional command” that protects both the Chief Justice and the integrity of the judiciary. “This format is mandatory and cannot be waived,” the AG emphasized.

On the matter of alleged bias, the AG pushed back against demands for the recusal of two Supreme Court judges on the investigative committee.

He clarified that Justice Samuel Adibu Asiedu did not take part in a related injunction hearing. Therefore, no grounds exist to disqualify him.

Regarding Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, the AG explained that his past involvement in unrelated cases with one petitioner does not imply bias.

The AG also confirmed that all committee members had taken the required oath of office, contrary to the CJ’s claims.

Finally, the AG argued that the injunction request lacks legal merit and urged that the impeachment process continue in line with the Constitution.
