Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has formally retracted allegations he made against the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, concerning alleged corruption in the recruitment processes of the country’s security services.
The Minority Leader also offered an unqualified apology to the Interior Minister for the claims, which had earlier sparked intense debate in Parliament and within the public space.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin had previously alleged that the Interior Minister was involved in corrupt practices relating to the recruitment of personnel into some of the nation’s security agencies. The claims generated widespread public discussion and drew sharp responses from members of the Majority in Parliament.
However, addressing the matter on the floor of Parliament, Mr. Afenyo-Markin withdrew the allegations and expressed regret over the comments made against the Minister.
He stated that upon further reflection and review of the issues surrounding the matter, he deemed it appropriate to retract the statements and apologise to the Interior Minister.
The Minority Leader said his decision was intended to uphold the dignity of Parliament and ensure that public discourse remained respectful and responsible.
The apology follows strong reactions from the Majority Caucus, who had earlier demanded that Mr. Afenyo-Markin substantiate the allegations or face sanctions from the House.
The issue had also drawn national attention, with calls from some quarters for clarity regarding the integrity of recruitment processes within the country’s security services.
Parliament is expected to continue discussions on measures aimed at strengthening transparency and public confidence in security sector recruitment.
