Afenyo-Markin reports to police over protest assault claims

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has voluntarily presented himself to assist with an ongoing investigation into an alleged altercation involving a police officer during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration held on Monday, May 5, 2025.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) initiated the probe after receiving clearance from the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, who instructed the Effutu MP to cooperate fully.

In response, Mr. Afenyo-Markin reported to the CID on Wednesday, May 7, to support the inquiry.

However, the case has taken a new turn, as Mr. Afenyo-Markin has filed a counter-petition alleging that he was in fact assaulted by the officer in question, identified as Constable Forson.

According to the Minority Leader, the officer struck him forcefully in the chest as he led demonstrators toward Parliament to submit a petition calling for greater judicial independence.

Afenyo-Markin claimed the impact left him dazed and short of breath, and he had to be helped away by parliamentary security and supporters. The officer allegedly fled the scene after the incident, raising concerns about accountability.

The Police Service says both complaints are being investigated with due diligence and that the public will be kept informed as the processes unfold.
