The Member of Parliament for Afadzato South Constituency in the Volta Region, Mr. Frank Afriyie, has organized the first-ever Skilled Workers Conference for artisans in the constituency.
Held over the weekend at the district capital, Ve-Golokuati, the conference brought together hundreds of artisans, including carpenters, hairdressers, seamstresses, masons, electricians, among others.
The conference, which the MP said will be held annually, is an initiative aimed at creating a common platform for skilled workers in the district to interact and share the challenges they face in their respective professions. The engagement is expected to foster a better understanding of how artisans can complement the efforts of government and other stakeholders in addressing these challenges.
Mr. Afriyie, who also serves as a Governing Board Member of the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence, said the Skilled Workers Conference will give him the opportunity to obtain first-hand information through direct interaction with what he described as one of the “very important sectors” of the district’s economy.
The MP, who is also a Member of Parliament’s Local Government and Rural Development Committee, emphasized that one of the most effective ways to grow the local economy is to empower artisans, who, according to him, constitute a significant portion of the informal sector of the economy.
