Frank Afriyie, Member of Parliament (MP) for Afadjato South, has recounted an experience in which he was allegedly denied a hospital bed after being rushed to a health facility for medical attention.
According to the MP, medical staff only attended to him after his wife informed them that he was a sitting Member of Parliament.
Mr Afriyie said the incident highlighted what is commonly referred to as the “no-bed syndrome,” a situation in which patients are turned away from health facilities due to the unavailability of beds.
He argued that the situation was sometimes applied in ways that discriminates against certain individuals, raising concerns about fairness and equal access to healthcare services.
The MP speaking on the floor of parliament, stressed the need for improvements in the country’s healthcare delivery system to ensure that all citizens, regardless of status, receive timely and adequate medical care.
He called on relevant authorities to address the challenges confronting health facilities, particularly issues relating to infrastructure and capacity, to prevent similar occurrences.
