Adaklu Sofa residents angry over killer electricity bills after COVID free light

Residents of Adaklu Sofa, a farming community in the Adaklu-Anyigbe District of the Volta Region are angry over what they describe as killer electricity bills being given to them after the 2020 elections.

The residents say they have in recent times received their electricity bills from the Electricity Company of Ghana with disbelieving at the amounts billed them after the COVID 19 free light from his Excellency Nana Akuffo Addo.

President Nana Akuffo Addo stated in his sixth COVID-19 address to the nation and also before election 2020 announced that electricity consumption was free. He added that it covered persons who consumed 0-50 Kilowatts hours per month for three months at the time (January, February and March). The President also announced that government would pay 50 percent of the electricity bill for residential and commercial consumers, for the period, using the March 2020 bill as the benchmark. This meant if your electricity bill was GHC100, you were to pay only GHC50, with the Government absorbing the remaining GHC50.00.

However, Adaklu Sofa people lament that before the free Covid-19 electricity most of them are on postpaid between GHS5.00 to GHS10.00.

But immediately after the 2020 general elections, residents are now receiving bills ranging from GHS150 to GHS200.

The residents believe that the government only used the free light for the campaign in the election of 2020. “This is pure deception and we never expected this from the number gentleman of the land, why should a president lie to his citizens, a president who engages in ‘ma trick wo’ antics is not fit to occupy the presidency. All they did was to pile up the bills over the period and even added more to them because if someone paid GHS 10.00 an amount previously, that person should be paying at most GHS 40.00 and not 150.00 cedis and above” a resident expressed.

The devastating effect of the astronomical light bills to the community is that boreholes that are powered by electricity for the supply of water to the people have come to a standstill. These bills have shot up ranging from GHS1700 and GHS2000 compelling the community to resort to using unhygienic water.

The people of Sofa call on ECG to explain why they are given killer electricity bills. They also called on President Nana Akuffo Addo to come to their aid as this will only worsen their livelihood.
