The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that a large fire near the National Lotteries office, opposite the Accra Arts Centre, destroyed over 50 wooden structures on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
The fire was reported at 6:20 PM GMT. A team from the Ministries Fire Station arrived six minutes later, but the flames had already spread rapidly. Firefighters faced a major challenge—non-functioning hydrants in the area.
To contain the fire, four additional fire engines were dispatched from the Electoral Commission, Accra City, Parliament House, and the Greater Accra Regional Headquarters.
Thanks to swift coordination, crews managed to bring the blaze under control by 7:00 PM and fully extinguished it by 8:44 PM.

The destroyed structures included wooden kiosks and temporary dwellings. Fortunately, nearby buildings were saved due to the prompt response.
Senior fire officials, including ACFO II Osmond Anum and Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander ACFO II Rashid Nisawu, supervised the operation.
GNFS has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. This incident highlights ongoing issues with hydrant infrastructure and fire safety in Accra’s crowded, high-risk zones, where poor spatial planning and combustible materials heighten the danger.
