The Accra Regional Police Command has launched a full investigation into incidents of violence that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run election held on Friday, July 11.

A key focus of the probe is a viral video showing a uniformed police officer assaulting a journalist at a polling station.

The officer has been interdicted and is now facing criminal charges for assault, according to a statement issued by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the region.

“Statements from complainants and eyewitnesses have been obtained, and arrests are expected soon,” the police said.

Victims of the violence have also been issued Police Medical Forms to support their treatment and aid the investigation.

The rerun was called after the original results were annulled due to procedural errors. However, instead of restoring public trust, the election was marred by violence, intimidation, and allegations of police brutality.

The Police Command assured the public that anyone found culpable will be held accountable, regardless of status.

“We encourage the public to assist our investigations by reporting any credible information through emergency lines 18555 or 191,” the statement urged.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from media advocates and election observers, raising fresh concerns about press freedom and voter safety during elections in Ghana.
