The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, has urged contractors handling newly launched infrastructure projects in the constituency to prioritize local employment, appealing for about 80 percent of workers to be recruited from within the constituency.
She made these remarks during a sod-cutting ceremony in three separate electoral areas in the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday.
Hon. Aubynn said the phase one of all projects will see the construction of a 2-Storey 4-unit kindergarten block with ancillary facilities at Daryl Hadith Islamic School in the Darkuman East Electoral Area.
At the Alafia Nyamekye Electoral Area, the reserved lawmaker cut another sod for the construction of a 2-storey vertical extension of the 8-unit classroom block at Darkuman Junior High School with ancillary facilities.
She ended her constituency tour at the Kwashibu Electoral Area, where she had the final sod cutting for the construction of a clinic.
These projects fall in line with President Mahama’s directives that all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) should prioritize the development of schools and health facilities following the release of about 80% of the District Assembly Common Fund.
Addressing the media, Hon. Aubynn made a passionate appeal to all contractors tasked to work on all three projects to have 80% of their workforce employed from the community.
She stressed that not everyone can fit into white-collar jobs and that there are skilled laborers who can help with the project.
“With the MCE and Assembly, supported by the opinion leaders and the chief in the municipality, we went round to cut sod to begin the project. I’m sure you witnessed all the events and contractors.
I also appeal to them that we all can’t be employed in the public sector. We all can’t do white-collar jobs. These are jobs coming right to the doorsteps of the people, and we are not suggesting that he take on people who are not qualified or skilled to work. However, there are a lot of handy men around who can help with the project, and so I’ve appealed to him to take on about 80% of his work force from the constituency,” she stated.
She added that it will make the young more productive and feel like part of the project.
“That way our youth will have something to do, and then they will also own and feel part of the project,” she added.
Ewurabena Aubynn is serving her first term in Parliament after winning the 2024 general election under the ticket of the National Democratic Party (NDC).
