Former Deputy Finance Minister and MP for Atiwa East, Abena Osei-Asare, has condemned the newly introduced GHC1 fuel levy, calling it an unfair burden on citizens.
She said the levy prevents Ghanaians from enjoying the benefits of the cedi’s recent appreciation. Speaking to Joy FM on June 9, she accused the government of breaking its promise to reduce taxes. “Why stop Ghanaians from enjoying the gains of a stronger cedi?” she asked. “Running the economy goes beyond shouting slogans.”
Osei-Asare, who chairs Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had promised to lower taxes. However, she believes the new fuel levy does the opposite. “You told Ghanaians you would ease their burden. Instead, you’ve added to it,” she added.
The Energy Sector Levy adds GHS1 per litre on petrol and diesel. According to the Finance Ministry, the money will help fix energy sector challenges and ensure stable power supply.
But critics disagree. The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) calls the levy a regressive tax that hits ordinary people the hardest.
Meanwhile, public frustration is growing. Many are already struggling with rising fuel prices and inflation. Though the government claims the levy is temporary and necessary, citizens say it worsens the cost of living.
