A/R: Fear grips Offinso residents as ‘trotro’ mate shot dead

A violent armed robbery attack in the Offinso South Municipality of the Ashanti Region has claimed the life of a bus conductor, commonly referred to as a ‘trotro mate.’

The deadly incident occurred on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, along the Ayinasusu–Salam road.

Eyewitnesses report that two individuals, posing as passengers, approached a commercial minibus. Just as they attempted to board, a third accomplice suddenly emerged from nearby bushes and opened fire, instantly killing the conductor.

Assemblyman for the Ayinasusu Electoral Area, Ibrahim Yogo, confirmed the tragic event in an interview with Citi News.

He revealed that the attackers then threatened the driver, demanding a sack that had allegedly been handed to him earlier in Wenchi.

“The gunmen threatened the driver and fired warning shots into the air to scare off onlookers. Upon hearing the gunfire, I immediately contacted the police, who rushed to the scene, but the suspects had already escaped,” Yogo stated.

This is the first armed robbery of its kind recorded in the area, and it has triggered widespread panic among commuters and residents who regularly travel along the route.

Police have since launched a full-scale investigation and are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

The incident has also renewed calls for enhanced security measures along regional roads, particularly in areas vulnerable to criminal activity.
