The third edition of the Chung Do Kwan Ghana (Traditional) Open Taekwondo Championship 2025 has wrapped up on a high note, bringing together young athletes from various schools and organizations dedicated to nurturing Taekwondo among children at Oyibi in the Greater Accra.
Held under the theme “Teaching Kids to Be Safe Without Making Them Scared,” the event drew 97 students ,made up of 57 girls and 40 boys from schools across the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.
Participating schools included St. Peter’s Mission School (Ashaley-Botwe, New Town and East Legon campuses), Accra Grammar School (Oyibi), and Elim Mission Academy (Abokobi-Boi).
Also represented were Dankamf Educational Complex, MAM Academy, Nukeenu Cluster of Schools, Winipraise School (all in Oyibi), St. Peter’s Mission School (Kwafokrom, Nsawam), and The Banner School (Oyibi).
The competitors, aged between 6 and 11, took part in key Taekwondo disciplines such as ‘Gyeokpa’ (board breaking) displays, ‘Kyorugi’ (sparring), and ‘Poomsae’ (forms).
In the girls’ ‘Gyeokpa’ division for ages 6–8, Stephania Gianna Martey Quarshie from St. Peter’s Mission School in Kwafokrom, Nsawam, claimed gold, while,for ages 9–12, Elizabeth Owusu Bamidele from the same school took the won gold.
On the boys’ side, Abdellah Ahyan Zakari from St. Peter’s Mission School in Ashaley-Botwe won gold in the 6–8 age group, while Mikel Awuah Boateng from the East Legon branch secured gold for ages 9–11 category.
In ‘Kyorugi’ sparring, Quarshie Empress Harela from Banner School in Oyibi earned gold in the girls’ 6–8 category, and Anderson Mercedes Anowa from St. Peter’s Mission School in Kwafokrom, Nsawam, won gold for ages 9–11.
For the boys’ sparring, Collins Kaakyire Amoah from St. Peter’s Mission School in Kwafokrom, Nsawam, took gold in ages 6–8, with Divine Yorborney Kpodo from Elim Mission Academy in Abokobi-Boi claiming victory in the 9–11 group.
The ‘Poomsae’ forms competition saw Zakariah Doha Jannah Bayanka from St. Peter’s Mission School in Kwafokrom win gold in the girls’ division, while Frempong Faith from the same school triumphed in the boys’ category.
Reflecting on the event, Master Raphael Sylvanus Akoto, President of Chung Do Kwan Ghana, shared that this third edition had been a resounding success.
He noted a rise in participating schools compared to last year, signaling that students and educators are increasingly embracing the martial art’s principles and potential.
He said more schools have reached out to enroll their students for future competitions, highlighting how the championship gives young learners a chance to display their talents, build self-assurance, and foster inclusion through sports.
