Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

A coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from 2017 to 2024 has declared full support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2028 presidential bid.

At a press conference held on Monday, June 23, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, the group, now operating under the name Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia, announced a “strong, unshaken endorsement” of the former Vice President. This comes ahead of the NPP’s internal flagbearer elections scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Why They Support Bawumia

The forum emphasized that its endorsement goes beyond symbolic backing. Instead, they described it as a strategic, hands-on commitment to Dr. Bawumia’s campaign.

“After consulting with all aspirants and carefully assessing their vision and competence, we believe Dr. Bawumia is the most suitable leader to drive both party unity and national progress,” a spokesperson said.

They pointed to Bawumia’s leadership in Ghana’s digital transformation, such as the rollout of the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and paperless port systems, as proof of his capacity to lead a modern economy.

Experience and Network

The group said that 95% of its members previously served as constituency and regional executives, with many holding leadership roles for over 16 years. “With our deep knowledge of the NPP’s internal dynamics and electoral strategy, we will ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message reaches every corner of Ghana,” they added.

Grassroots Power and National Appeal

Furthermore, the forum praised Bawumia for his inclusive and accessible leadership style. According to them, his ability to connect with grassroots members, youth, and floating voters gives the NPP a strategic advantage.

They also argued that Bawumia’s widespread recognition from the 2024 campaign eliminates the uncertainty that comes with introducing a new candidate.

Mobilization Strategy

The former MMDCEs announced plans to activate their networks across all 16 regions. Their strategy includes:

  • Door-to-door campaigns to promote Bawumia’s vision.
  • Fundraising and logistical support for the campaign.
  • Countering misinformation with verified facts.
  • Reaching floating voters with relatable messaging.

They described Dr. Bawumia as a leader who balances continuity with innovation, ready to build on existing gains while introducing fresh ideas for national development.
