16 dead in a crash at Akim Asafo

Sixteen people have died after two KIA Granbird buses they were travelling in collided at Akim Asafo on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

The passengers from both vehicles which includes 13 males and 3 females died on the spot.

According to police, the crash, which occurred around 1:30 am on Friday, was caused by the undue overtaking of one of the drivers involved.

The driver of Kia Granbird bus en route Kumasi attempted to overtake leading to head-on with another Kia Granbird bus which was coming from Kumasi.

Several other passengers also sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Suhum Government Hospital and Akim Asafo Health Center for treatment.

The deceased persons were removed from the scene and also sent to the Suhum Government Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification and autopsy.

Police officers from the Suhum Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), District Police Patrol team and Kibi MTTD Police Command were also at the scene directing traffic.

The buses involved in the crash were towed from the scene to aid free flow of traffic.
